How Laser Hair Removal Works

The laser removes hair by selectively targeting the pigment of the hair inside the follicle. Each "pulse" of the laser light takes less than a second to disable large numbers of hair follicles, without damaging the surrounding skin. Our diverse laser hair removal equipment allows us to treat all skin types easily and effectively.

The process differs only slightly between the lasers we use here at Trillium Laser Clinic. Using our EpiTouch laser, the area to be treated is prepared by applying a thin coat of clear gel, and then the laser pulses are quickly and evenly applied. With our Candela YAG laser, gel coating is not required, as the laser features a cooling spray to protect the surrounding skin. With any of our laser treatments anesthesia is not required, as most individuals experience only a slight stinging sensation as the laser pulses are applied. Some areas of the body do tend to be more sensitive than others and sometimes gentle swelling or redness will occur for a few hours following treatment.

Before Your Procedure

We will discuss your “before treatment” plan during your initial consultation. Most patients do not require special preparation, though a mild medication might be necessary for those with darker skin tones. You may shave up to the time of your appointment.

During Your Procedure

Laser hair removal is very effective and when performed by trained medical personnel, is very safe. Most patients do not require anesthesia. If you prefer, you may use a topical anesthetic to reduce any potential discomfort. Laser hair removal treatments are not a long procedure. Face areas are done in 15 to 20 minutes, underarms and bikini lines take roughly the same amount of time, while larger areas such as backs and both legs take approximately 60-90 minutes.
After Your Procedure

In most cases there is no special care required after your laser treatment. The treated areas may appear slightly pink, perhaps a little inflamed, but only for the first few hours after your treatment. You may wish to apply a topical ointment to soothe the skin. Your technician will provide more details on any specific care you may require.
Potential Complications

Issues after receiving laser hair removal treatments are rare, but they do occasionally happen. 99.999% of hair removal complications are minor and easily corrected. Examples of potential complications are changes in skin tone, scarring, infection.
